Hot Flash
Produced by: Alisa Siegel of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation
This program deals with the issue of menopausal women who took Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) and then were told - in glaring headlines - in July 2002 that HRT increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and breast cancer. The news was crushing for the huge number of women who have managed a big chunk of their lives with these drugs. Drugs that for decades promised stronger bones, sharper memories, healthier hearts, an energy boost, and the relief of some of the most unpleasant symptoms of menopause. Now, many women are finding it almost impossible to live without the drugs. And they are having to make grueling choices. This documentary is about seven women, many of whom have gone back on HRT in spite of the risks. Two doctors talk about how they counsel their patients about this difficult matter. Hot Flash is about taking charge of your own health, making informed decisions, and the dilemma of doctors who know one thing scientifically but see another in a suffering patient. |
